Dear Bella

19 Sep

Dear Bella,

I admit it was with great relief that I received your letter of 9/12. My feelings for you have changed since I realized that in becoming a vampire, you would be exchanging your vegetarian beliefs for stalking, attacking, and sucking the blood out of animals with your own mouth. I just don’t know if I can spend eternity with someone who so easily casts aside their convictions. Perhaps ‘The Vampire Diaries’ would work out better for you, since they use plastic bottles. Best wishes to you as well. I hear there are great colleges in Florida.

Dear Edward

Dear Edward,

Much as I love you and your ability to swing me to the top of a tree in a single bound, I find that I love guacamole more.  And Hersheys, and omelets, and twice baked potatoes.  It’s not me, it’s you…one bite from you would prevent me from ever taking another bite again.  And that’s just scary.  Don’t take it personally.  Best wishes in all your endeavors.

A fantastic vehicle for Magic-seekers

As children who morph into adulthood (become teens), we go from having our identities based on how our family sees us to how society (school, peers) sees us. The accursed self-awareness gene strikes overnight, and suddenly we begin to realize how different we are from everyone else…while being the same as everyone else at the same time. We have no clue what’s happened to us or why we’re feeling the way we are. Movies about magic are not really about practicing witchcraft. They are about us, about people born with gifts that make them both special and a freak. They help teens, tweens, and grown-ups, consider who they are, where they fit, and why they are.

The monster within

29 Jul

Though there will always be those lines of dialogue that make me cringe and make up my own, the movie ‘Twilight’ continues to move me.  Vampires are a terrific vehicle to tell this story through.  I touched on this in my previous post, but the concept has continued to consume me.

Vampires are monsters.  Pure and simple.  Edward knows it.  Bella knows it.  You and I know it.  But here is what this little tween flick won’t let me forget.  This story isn’t about the humans.  It’s about the monsters.  It’s about us.

Every single one of us is a monster. Continue reading

My journey into ‘Twilight’

30 Jun

In the Darkness (a.k.a. Theater):

Am I the one person left in the United States who had not seen any of the ‘Twilight’ films until last night? It certainly felt like it. On a whim yesterday I went looking for three movies worthy of a triple feature’s worth of my time on my day off and found ONE ticket remaining for the ‘Twilight’ Trilogy showing last night. Since I hadn’t seen any of them but have heard so much about them, the timing was perfect, and so I clicked. Lit fans, consider yourselves warned: I haven’t read the books, and am therefore completely ignorant of any details the film missed. Normally, I’d be put off by someone who had not read the source material for adapted work, but in this case, I felt a sense that this was a gift to have a fresh perspective on all three films at once.
