‘Downton Abbey’ s4e7 – ‘A desire of suitors’ (edited)

22 Feb

“All life is a series of problems which we must try and solve…until at last we die… Why don’t you get us an ice cream?” – Granny, Dowager Countess, cheerer of souls

So now all of the sudden Edith has taken an interest in Mary and Tom and the estate management…right. I find it hilarious that she’s suddenly out on business with them, but also think it’s high time she got interested in being part of the family and that which concerns them and keeps them fed and together.

It’s possible that Edith may have developed a case of “baby brain.” Now that Edith has decided to keep her baby and can’t live without it in her life, she’s also decided from just this one brief encounter that this tenant farmer is so trustworthy he would not only take her baby but let her come and go from his farm all she wants to see it and never tell a single soul. But Aunt Rosamund (finally) has a big plan to go away to the Continent for several months to “learn French.” But as Granny says, “If [Rosamund] wishes to be understood by a foreigner, she shouts.” In about two shakes, Granny does the math and holds a High Inquisition, I mean, luncheon for Rosamund and Edith. GRANNY KNOWS will be our next t-shirt. Continue reading

Do yourself a favor and fast forward to start at 1:10…that’s where this episode actually begins.

‘Downton Abbey’ s4e6 – Granny’s house of cards

19 Feb

I’m trying not to get all teary-eyed this week that this is actually the UK season finale with only the Christmas special left to go of Downton Abbey for the whole year.  You may have to get me some kleenex next week.

“That will keep me warm while I’m crossing the ‘raging’ seas.” – Lord Grantham

Uncle Harold (Cora’s brother) is in so much trouble back in the States that they’re circling the wagons and dragging Lord Grantham into it.  Mrs. Hughes “interferes” so that Bates won’t be taken from Anna during this time…which means that Mary finally knows and has to interfere herself.  So Thomas is to be treated to a grand trip to America…and “all those handsome stewards.” Continue reading

“When you fall off a horse, you need a bit of time to get back up on the saddle.” – Mrs. Patmore

Maybe she did her culinary learning in the wild west, but Mrs. Patmore certainly knows to give Alfred some space after his first failed attempt at becoming a chef.  He’s going to regret not letting Daisy show him how to make the anchovy sauce when he arrives at the Ritz in a few days. ‘Downton Abbey’ s4e4 – Higher & holier

3 Feb

“I don’t accept there is any shame in this.  You’re not spoiled.  You’re made higher to me, and holier because of the suffering you have been put through.” – Bates

It’s finally Bates’ turn.  This is his episode for heartbreak, detective work, and the beginning of his journey toward justice…or revenge.  The husband rises alone in his no longer cozy cottage, Anna rises alone in her attic room in the Abbey, and the two who have fought so hard to be one are now living their lives separately.  And Bates still has no idea why.  His grief drives him to eavesdrop on Anna’s conversation with Mrs. Hughes and threaten to quit and leave forever if Mrs. Hughes doesn’t tell him what’s happened.  If he didn’t care so much for Anna, he would not have gone to so much trouble.  Or have been so devastated by the truth she had to relate…and the lie. ‘Downton Abbey’ s4e3 – ‘Honesty is the best policy’

3 Feb

My heart broke all over again as Anna walked so slowly across the opening shot.  She’s not the same woman, and maybe I’m not the same Downton Abbey viewer.  Since there’s no going back, my greatest hope is for justice for her…and it cannot happen too soon.

She accidentally seats herself next to Green (her attacker) at breakfast and then launches away from the table to her chores.  She won’t let Bates touch her, won’t tell any of the Crawleys when they ask after her, and she blames herself for what’s happened.  I love Mrs. Hughes’ counsel with all of my heart…

‘Downton Abbey’ s4e2 – ‘Viewer discretion is advised’

19 Jan

Downton Abbey is “back at full strength” with a big house party of people ready to make an impression.  The coronets have been dusted off, and the white ties are out in force.  What a shame we didn’t get to follow the ladies into London for their wardrobe shopping trip before the big event!  These are some snazzy rags.

Too bad all the people who arrive are not as snazzy on the inside.

But we’ll get to that later.  This is a “parental guidance suggested” episode…and so is this blog post.

Mastermind Edna is using her Jedi mind tricks on Tom…and once again it’s working.  Slightly terrified they’re going to work.  Or they already have.

“You understand me, don’t you?” ~ Tom
