A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott version)

Merry Christmas. I saved the best Christmas film on my Christmas flick list for last.

This Victorian-era Dickens classic is a must for anyone feeling world-weary or Scroogish.

While You Were Sleeping

This is my absolute, all-time favorite movie.  There is no other film that can cheer me up when I’m down the way this does.

Lucy has no family.  Zero.  No poop in her barn.  But she sure does wish she had.  She’s got a crush on a guy who comes by her booth everyday.  When he’s injured unexpectedly one Christmas day, his family mistakes her for his fiancee, and bingo!–instant family.  Only problem is–he has a brother. Once Upon a Christmas

Strictly Velveeta.  Okay, seriously Velveeta.  As in they bought stock in it to make this film.  But if you skip all this cheese you are sooooo going to miss all the lovely vitaminy broccoli goodness underneath.

I loved Pax TV.  Their original tv series–Hope Floats, Little Men–were must sees.  Their first New Year’s they aired a classic movie marathon–Royal Wedding, Charade, etc.  Best. New. Year’s. Ever.  Then one Christmas, out came Once Upon a Christmas.  It’s like a Christmas Nanny McPhee. Continue reading

Home Alone

Gotta love it.  Must see.  Total classic.  Wish I’d been that smart as a kid.

I first saw this film as a teenager, and what I love about it is that it really made me stop and think what would happen to me if mom and dad weren’t there?  My experience with family has been that it’s a love/hate thing…can’t live with ’em…can’t shoot ’em.  Just kidding.  But sometimes it feels that way.  I love that right smack dab in the middle of a highly entertaining popcorn flick you find a fabulous message.  “Be careful what you wish for.” Continue reading

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

When the animated Grinch stole Christmas long ago, he stole my heart with it.  It has a similar message for me to Elf, only more in a “how not to do it” kind of way.

Elf

If you read my 2011 summer movies post, you already know the reason I watch this film.  Three words: Zooey Deschanel sings.  That, and the maple syrup.  This movie is like fruitcake on film, and unlike real fruitcake, I’m glad they made it.

Trading Places

It was getting to chick-flicky in here for me and I had to take a break.  This fabulous modern take on “The Prince and the Pauper” will rock your world.  Two wealthy well-bred elderly brothers make a bet with each other to ruin two “little” people’s lives to get their jollies.  Have you ever known anyone like that?  Or maybe the real question is have you ever known (or been) anyone who has had their life yanked around by someone else?  Don’t answer that.

Life is up one minute and down the next, or vice versa, but these two strangers on the receiving end of a cruel prank pull themselves up by their bootstraps and do something about it.  Choices are the glorious ornaments of life. Continue reading
