Once Upon a Christmas

Strictly Velveeta.  Okay, seriously Velveeta.  As in they bought stock in it to make this film.  But if you skip all this cheese you are sooooo going to miss all the lovely vitaminy broccoli goodness underneath.

I loved Pax TV.  Their original tv series–Hope Floats, Little Men–were must sees.  Their first New Year’s they aired a classic movie marathon–Royal Wedding, Charade, etc.  Best. New. Year’s. Ever.  Then one Christmas, out came Once Upon a Christmas.  It’s like a Christmas Nanny McPhee.

The story is about a family in ruins, well entrenched on the “Naughty” list.  A single dad tries to juggle work and keeping an au paur for his unruly but hurting kids.  Enter Kristen Claus…who tries to save Christmas for the whole world by converting this family to the “Nice” list.

One of the things I love about this film is that you expect Kristen to be as gooey on the inside as she is on the outside.  You expect her to be a doormat when the kids mistreat her.  But she isn’t.  She sets boundaries and lets them make their own choices.

It can be a bit painful to watch the Tooth Fairy and Rudolpha, but it’s so worth it.  Rudolpha’s expression “Christmas crazy” gets stuck in my head this time of year, and every time I say it (or write it) that’s exactly how I’m saying it.  Help.

Fortunately this film does air on ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas.  So grab your kids and a bucket of popcorn to properly absorb the cheese, and enjoy.
