12 flicks of Christmas

13 Dec

My gift to you this year is to share the random flicks I most love to watch every holiday season each day until Christmas.  Perhaps I should preface this list with the admission that there are a couple of “standard” Christmas flicks I have never seen, as well as a famous and much-loved flick that I do not love — you may not find what you’re expecting on a Christmas movie-watching list.  I can’t help but hope this silly list will offer you something new you’ve never seen before, or a new perspective on something you have, or just a brief glimpse into the bizarre recesses of my mind.  Try to enjoy at least one a day…or better yet, treat yourself to a colossal one-day pajamathon.

Christmas Flick #12 – The Great Muppet Caper

No, you’re not crazy.  There is no Christmas in this movie.  But that’s not my criteria here.

Travel with me back to December 198-.  Imagine my brothers and I ushered upstairs into a dark room with a little tv while my parents host a glittering grown-up Christmas party.  My feelings would have been crushed forever to have missed the party, except that The Great Muppet Caper was broadcast live for the first time that night.  I laughed so hard I cried.  “Hey, a movie…is there any way to stop it?”  “Oh, no!  We’ll never get to England now!”  “What color are his hands now?”  “I’m only here for a brief cameo.”  “I brought the paper towels!”  Not only is it one of my top movies of all time, but it brings back warm memories of Christmas — footed pjs, special treats, sparkling parties (viewed thru a railing on commercial breaks).

It also makes my list because…(drum roll please)…the Muppets are now in theaters once again this Christmas season!  Dear Santa, please fill my stocking with movie tix.  Pretty please with sugar plum fairies on top.  I promise to share with my nieces and nephews who deserve to grow up with the joy of the Muppets.  Pleeeeeeeeeze?

I still have the VCR recording my parents made of the movie while we watched it on tv that night long, long ago, and the commercials themselves are a jolly Christmas hoot.  I’ll let you borrow it if it will enhance your Christmas enjoyment.

Love love LOVE that movie! And if one of my Christmas movies is Pete’s Dragon, I see nothing wrong with Great Muppet Caper being on a Christmas movie list!

You can never overestimate the value of being and staying childlike, especially during Christmas, a season where it’s so easy for grown-ups to turn into Scrooges. Keeping movies like this close to my heart is good medicine for me. 🙂
