In love…with the new ‘Sherlock Holmes’

31 Oct

Just one episode in, and I can’t wait for more.  It’s the ‘Batman Begins’ of the Sherlock Holmes franchise.

In the first episode, ‘A Study in Pink,’ we first meet Sherlock Holmes looking upside down and sniffing a corpse.  Even if I hadn’t seen the previews, I would have known he was either morbid, or crazy, or Sherlock Holmes.  You know it’s only gonna get better from there.

But well before we meet the title character, we get an in-depth look at the man he could not be Sherlock without — Dr. John Watson.  John is a military doctor readjusting in 21st Century London from a tour in Afghanistan.  He thinks Sherlock is brilliant.  Which is “not what people normally say” when they meet the “highly functioning sociopath.”  I love that Dr. Watson is so much more than a brainless lackey.

I’m not going to tell you a single thing more about the show or the episode because you just need to go watch it for yourself.  What I will tell you is that I had my doubts about the 21st Century twist…I always have doubts when my favorite literature is remade in films.  But now I just have so much to look forward to.  The characters are refreshing and unexpected.  Who would expect a blogging Dr. Watson?  I love the casting.  I love the texting and the shots and the editing.  Suffice to say, I know where I’m gonna be tonight at 8:00.

Check it out.
